No charges filed against former undersheriff - Hamilton Montana News

The wife of Ravalli County’s former undersheriff was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor assault in connection with a domestic dispute in July.

Angela McConnell is slated to make an initial appearance on Sept. 23 in Ravalli County Justice Court on a charge of partner or family member assault.

Kathleen Jenks, assistant state attorney general, said the investigation is complete and that McConnell’s husband, Kevin, wasn’t expected to be charged.

According to the complaint, Angela McConnell caused bodily injury to her spouse. She was drinking alcohol and hit him with her hands and household objects. The assault ended when Kevin McConnell left the house. He had bruises and scratches.

Angela McConnell told investigators she was the primary aggressor and that her husband acted only in self-defense, the complaint said.

She faces a fine up to $1,000 and a year in jail if convicted. She also would be required to complete and pay for counseling.

Kevin McConnell was put on administrative leave from the sheriff’s office on July 18 and resigned July 23 after a domestic altercation at their Darby area home.

Angela McConnell told 911 dispatchers that her husband was driving while drunk and that a physical altercation had occurred between them.

Missoula County Sheriff Mike McMeekin investigated the case.

In his resignation, McConnell, 44, cited personal and family reasons for leaving the sheriff’s office, where he had worked since 1996.

He had been undersheriff since 2002 and also served as a patrol deputy, patrol sergeant, search and rescue coordinator, deputy coroner and chief deputy coroner.
